Spectral Classification Exercise

Instructions for Downloading this CLEA Exercise




Dowloading exercise from Colgate server:

Dowloading exercise from Colgate website:

  1. You must use a PC (not a Macintosh)
    • Microsoft Explorer is preferable to Netscape, but either will work
  2. Download the self extracting file from the Colgate ftp site by clicking:
    • CLEA Spectral Classification Lab
    • CLEA Spectral Classification Lab [DISABLED]
    • Save the file on your computer's hard disk (preferably as C:\SpecClas.exe]
    • [You may want to also save the file "SpecClas.exe" on a floppy or zip disk for later use on other computers]
  3. On your PC, go to drive C:, then double click on the "SpecClas.exe" icon to extract the files
    • select the "unzip" option
    • The extracted files will automatically be saved in the folder C:\Clea\SpecClas unless you specify otherwise
  4. On your PC, go to drive C:, open the Clea folder, then the SpecClas folder
  5. Start the Spectral Classification exercise by double clicking on "Clea_spe.exe" NOT "Star Clas" as instructed in the handout.
  6. When you are done with the exercise, please delete the Clea folder and the "SpecLas.exe" file from the computer if it is not yours

Dowloading exercise from CLEA website [Please use this procedure only if the above two procedures don't work.]:

  1. You must use a PC (not a Macintosh)
  2. Create a folder "CLEA" on your computer desktop (or in a location you want)
  3. Start another window in your web browser (Netscape or Explorer), so you can read this document in one window and access the lab exercise files in the other
  4. Access CLEA (Contemporary Laboratory Experiences in Astronomy website:
  5. Click on "Software" Button
  6. Click on "Spectral Classification of Stars"
  7. Download Executables to your Computer by clicking on "clea_spe.zip"
    • save the file in the "CLEA" folder on your computer
  8. Download Spectra Files to your computer by clicking on "jspectra.zip"
    • save the file in the "CLEA" folder on your computer
  9. You can now exit the web browser window accessing the CLEA site
  10. Open the "CLEA" folder
  11. unzip the clea_spe.zip file by double clicking the icon (and hope your machine has the unzipping software installed)
    • when the WinZip (or other extracting program) starts, chose "action / select all" and then click "extract" button
    • when asked for directory to output files, select to put unzipped files in CLEA folder
  12. unzip the jspectra.zip file
    • follow same procedure as above for clea_spe.zip file
  13. Now follow the instructions in Part 1 in the "Web Laboratory Exercise 1: Classification of Stellar Spectra" handout
    • ONE CORRECTION: Start the Spectral Classification exercise by clicking on "CLEA_SPE.EXE" NOT "Star Class" as instructed in the handout
  14. When you are done with the exercise, please delete the CLEA folder from the computer if it is not yours
